Of course, the natural colors and textures of the log and timber construction dominates the interior spaces. Leaving this color, we added a snap life by painting the ceiling a pale blue. The panel insets throughout were washed with a lighter color mixture to add some interest and distinction. Four plaster corbels at the base of two arches in the entry were stripped and glazed with several layers to draw out the sculptural detail of the pieces.

A deep brown for the walls, and a lighter shade on the ceiling give the bedroom a dramatic but soothing quality.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088515947120294722" style="DISPLAY: block; I'll be posting these images in the coming weeks. Generally I'll take a few quick shots when I finish my portion of a room, but it may take some time longer for a room to be fully finish, as with this powder room project from 2004. The project is located in Yorktown Heights NY. I worked on the paneling on the bottom half of the room, and the crown moulding at the ceiling. The designer, Rena Wilhelm, stipulated a sort of faux bois effect, but using a bronze metallic glaze. Between the treatment on the paneling, and the wallpaper, the transformation of the room is dramatic, and of another time.

The mirror also received some antiquing.

The crown moulding features the same treatment as the paneling, along with a touch of gilding to highlight some some of the moulding details

The before shot.

I just returned from Colorado where I worked on a couple of residential projects and a small mural for the Denver restaraunt, Le Central seen below. Below are photos from one of the projects; creating a painted finish on the two story fireplace in a loft in Downtown Denver.

The objective was to create a focal point that would enhance, and define the sitting area within the larger open space, without greatly encroaching upon the clean white backdrop of the loft. The majority of the loft remains white, retaining the spare industrial feel of the home, while some other intimate niches have been carved from the main space using deeper colors in the bedroom, and office.

We wanted to create a look that would build upon the richness of fabrics and objects in the client's collection.

I created a stencil based on a patterned throw belonging to the client.

The resulting finish carries rich tones of color onto the wall complimenting the textures, and color in the living area. The stenciled pattern is extremely subtle; emerging, and disappearing under thin washes of browns and reds, giving the impression of a worn tapestry, or aged wallpaper. The disintegration of the color is meant to reinforce the human scale of the sitting area while softening the transition into the broader, open layout of the home. The unique line of the fireplace is now better defined, as the form narrows gradually as it approaches the ceiling.

Detail of stencil

Foyer with imitation stone

Before and after of recent project in Irvington NY.
